The Maring Students’ Union (MSU) has condemned the anomalies found in the final electoral roll of 42-Tengnoupal Assembly Constituency and demanded the authorities to rectify it within a week. The union warned of launching various democratic forms of agitation if they fail to meet its demand.

During a press conference at Manipur Press Club on Monday, Shillei Morung, president of the union, said that many discrepancies were found in the final electoral roll published by the Chief Electoral Office, Manipur with regards to the 42-Tengnopupal Assembly Constituency.

Morung explained that the concerned authority had published a list of an electoral roll on November 11, 2021. In that list, there were 1,098 voters in 42/70 Moreh Ward Number IX. But in the final electoral roll that was released recently on January 5, 2022, the total voters have increased to 1,240. On top of this, the age of most of the newly enrolled voters is above 40 years. But the provision of new enrolment is given to those 18 years of age recently, the MSU president pointed out.

“How can the number of voters increase just within two month? This shows that there are lapses in the election department of Tengnoupal district,” he alleged.

He also pointed out irregularities existing in 42/52 Sibong Polling Station, the station which is bifurcated from 42/51 Kwatha.

As per gazetted notice of Tengnoupal district, Yangoupokpi is not among recognised village list of the district. But surprisingly the said village was included as a part of Sibong Polling Station, he said, asking “from where did this village come? Is it from Ukhrul, Churachandpur or Burma? It is highly suspected that the electoral roll was made in nexus with some particular groups.”

MSU cannot accept the newly released electoral roll, the president said and called on the authority concerned to rectify the anomalies within a week while warning of agitations if the concerns failed.
