Students of Wangjing High School on Tuesday observed a sit-in protest at the school campus, demanding the authority concerned to fill up the vacancy of teachers in the school under the School Phagat Hansi mission.

At the occasion, one Sagolsem Sushmita Chanu, a class X student condemned the authority for allegedly transferring two teachers from the school when the school had been barely managing with only 18 teachers. She said that the Wangjing High School which is one of the schools which were selected for the ‘School Phagat Hansi Mission', has a total of 448 students from class I to class X.

She said that owing to the lack of teachers, the students had not been able to study some subjects while the school also lacked proper infrastructures. She further appealed to the authorities concerned to take up necessary action regarding the issues, so that the students can attain their education without any hindrances.

School Management and Development Committee (SMDC) of Wangjing High School convenor Chongtham Suranjoi condemned the recent transfer of two teachers even though the organisation had already written to the authorities to fill the vacancy of teachers in the school.  He mentioned that the school does not have English, Hindi and primary teachers. The school only has 16 teachers, although it requires 30 teachers, he said.

He stated that the school lacks the proper facilities under the ‘School Phagat Hansi Mission'. The school only has five classrooms, he further said and appealed to the authority concerned to add two more classrooms. Since the school does not have a security guard, the local MLA had appointed a security guard, he mentioned.

Since the previous year, SMDC had been urging the authorities to provide proper office and fencing for the school compound, and to update the mid-day meal plan according to the number of students, he added.

He further cautioned that the SMDC and the guardians will boycott class if the authority fails to take up necessary action. He also accused the government for deteriorating schools, rather than improving them with the ‘School Phagat Hansi’ mission.

One Geeta, a guardian said that most of the students of Wangjing High School were from poor families which do not have the facility to get education from private schools. She drew the attention of the authority to take up necessary action promptly.
