The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) is all set to hold ‘street corner’ meetings from February 12 to 24 in various places of the state.
In a release issued on Thursday, STDCM stated that it has been demanding the state government to enlist Meitei or Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe list. In this regard, various movements and agitations have been launched from time to time. However, the state government has failed to translate their demand till date, he said.
To intensify awareness about the present status of Meetei/Meitei and its requirement to get constitutional safeguard, the ‘street corner’ meetings will be held, it added.
It recalled that the committee had halted their agitations for some period due to the prevailing pandemic but they were resumed by holding protests in various places of the state.
It further stated that on December 16, they had conducted a people’s convention wherein they resolved to call an 18-hour total shutdown if the authority concerned failed to submit the requisite recommendation to enlist Meitei or Meetei in SC list by December 27. However, the state government did not translate their demand into action and it resulted in imposing the shutdown, it stated.
The committee will continue to uphold its movement until the demand is fulfilled, it added.
