As part of their ongoing movement for the inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the Scheduled Tribes, the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) demonstrated a protest at the Wangjing-Lamding Keithel, Thoubal along with the Keithel vendors.
At the event, one Leishangthem Racheshori urged the state government to submit the recommendation to include the Meitei/Meetei in the Schedule Tribe list promptly. The protest was participated by members of STDCM and Thoubal District Committee.
Meanwhile, Meitei Pangal Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee (MPSTDC) senior vice president Haji Arafat Ali Khullakpam appealed to CM N Biren Singh for the inclusion of the Meitei Pangal community in the Scheduled Tribe list. He was speaking at a public meeting for the demand to include Meitei Pangal in the Scheduled Tribe, held at Sora in Kakching district.
He said the demand for the inclusion of Meitei Pangal in the scheduled tribe list is a legitimate demand. The demand was also raised back in 2015 with memorandums submitted to the officials of the then-ruling government, he continued. He also mentioned that the organisation had also submitted memorandums to chief minister N Biren and the MLAs of the valley regions as well.
At the protest, the protesters displayed placards which read ‘We demand the inclusion of Meitei Pangal in ST list’ and ‘Please listen to the voice of the vulnerable community’ etc.
