Sekmai Makha Leikai Sports Pavilion at Awang Sekmai, Imphal West was inaugurated on Monday.
The pavilion was constructed by the Awang Sekmai Scheduled Caste Development Committee (ASSCDC) without the support of the government, in an effort to curb drug abuse, the committee said.
ASSCDC president Khwairakpam Surjamani inaugurated the pavilion and handed it over to the people.
Khwairakpam Surjamani said that as part of the ASSCDC’s initiative for the people of Awang Sekmai, the Sekmai Makha Leikai Sports Pavilion which cost around Rs 8.5 lakh had been handed over to the people with the aim of producing more talented and successful sportspersons.
The pavilion was inaugurated in the presence of ASSCDC secretary Khwairakpam Ishwarchandra, vice president Yumlembam Sharat, Patriotic Writers Forum Manipur former president Yaiskul Khwairakpam, Sekmai assembly constituency former MLA Khwairakpam Devendra, ASSCDC treasurer Khwairakpam Anil, assistant secretary Khwairakpam Bormani and Awang Sekmai Maipa Purel Yumlembam Yaima.
The sports pavilion was constructed by ASSCDC with the aim of eradicating drug abuse from Awang Sekmai and promoting a healthy lifestyle for the youth, said ASSCDC secretary Kh Ishwarchandra. He mentioned that the committee will be initiating a tree plantation drive to fight the damage to the ecological balance and appealed for the support of the people.
Awang Sekmai former MLA Khwairakpam Devendra commended ASSCDC for taking the initiative of constructing many sports pavilions without any support from the government for the wellbeing of the people.
Patriotic Writers’ Forum Manipur former president Yaiskul Khwairakpam stressed on the importance of games and sports in developing the state and urged for the proactive enthusiasm of the youth in developing the culture of games and sports in the state.
