Soil health cards were distributed to farmers on the occasion of World Soil Day 2022, which was organised by KVK, Imphal East, CAU, at its Andro campus in Imphal East Monday.
Addressing the event, Horticulture and Soil Conservation official K Devdutta Sharma cautioned that Manipur may lose soil fertility and the soil may no longer be suitable for agriculture in the future due to lack of awareness among the farmers.
Pointing out that healthy soil would result in good productivity and healthy diet, the additional director urged farmers in the state to treat soil as a living being, at the World Soil Day 2022 event. The event was
Devdutta explained that a spoon full of soil contains billions of microbes, where half of them give benefits to human beings directly or indirectly. If the microbes in the soil die due to uses of certain chemicals by humans, the soil will lack fertility, thereby decreasing productivity as well as lack of nutrients in the products, he added.
Pradhan of Waiton GP P Surbala Devi urged the farmers to obtain soil health card to conserve the soil scientifically.
Cent per cent of farmers who had obtained Soil Health Card and got necessary treatment (if needed) gained high yielding, she said, adding the soil health card is a need for every farmer for sustainable agriculture.
Stating that the government functionaries and other concerned departments alone cannot conserve the soil without the support of the farmers, she appealed to the farmer’s fraternity to contribute to soil conservation for better harvest which is the key to economic generation of the state.
Soil Health Cards were distributed to 30 farmers during the programme, she said.
The event was also attended by director of Extension Education CAU, Imphal Prof Ph Ranjit Sharma as guests of honour while senior scientist and head I/C of KVK Imphal East Nonibala Devi presided the programme.
