Smuggler arrested, 18 gold bars weighing 2.99 kg seized in Manipur

The gold bars seized from an EECO van bearing registration number MN01AS-8825 were found concealed beneath the step of the left door.

One person was arrested and 18 bars of gold weighing 2.988 kg were seized from his possession by the police during frisking and checking operation at Pallel check-post by CDO unit Kakching, Manipur on Thursday.

Police said the arrested person identified himself as one Prakash Kshetri, 23 years, son of Ratan Kshetri, resident of Ward No 8, Moreh.

Following a tip off on smuggling of gold, frisking and checking operation was intensified at Pallel Check-post by CDO unit Kakching led by Subedar Ksh which led to the arrest and seizure at 10.30 am Thursday.

The gold bars were seized from an EECO van bearing registration number MN01AS-8825, police said, adding that they were found concealed beneath the step of the left door.

"Each gold bar was packed in plastic with a white sticker pasted on it. On the bottom of the bar, three small "W" letters and one large 'W" letter is carved along with a five petalled flower symbol carving. On the top of the bar Letter "W" has been carved. Each bar weighs 166 gm," police said.

The driver of the vehicle Prakash Kshetri was arrested.

Investigation is underway to find how he got the gold and where he was taking it. 

After the necessary formalities, the seized materials along with the arrested person will be handed over to Customs Department for necessary action.
