A sub-inspector of Churachandpur police T Jangkholal of reserved line, district headquarter Churachandpur has been placed under suspension from his service with immediate effect from Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a village chief on Monday night.
The order issued on Wednesday by SP Churachandpur district Shrivanand Surve came after the Churachandpur police conducted a departmental enquiry as per rule 66 part III of Assam Police Manual (APM) against the alleged misconduct.
The incident came to light on Thursday when residents of Henglep sub-division led by its KSO block and chief association attempted to stage a dharna in front of the DC office.
They alleged that SI T Jangkholal was acting on his personal interest by arresting and physically assaulting the chief of Henglep village Mangtinlal Haokip at Churachandpur Police Station with no explanation after he was picked up from Tuibong Bazar.
The protestors stationed at KIC complex, Tuibong on Thursday and demanded that the culprit and his associates be punished. Their leader held a talk with the SP at his official chamber and both parties reached an agreement.
In this regard, many chiefs’ associations also condemned the police act and said that it was a violation of Art 14 and 21 that refers to Right to Equality and Protection of Life and Personal Liberty of a Citizen.
The suspension order stated that during the period, under which it remains in force, the headquarter of SI T Jangkholal of Churachandpur district shall be at the Reserve Line, district headquarters Churachandpur, and he shall not leave the station without prior permission from SP Churachandpur district.
He shall report to the reserve officer to the superintendent of Police, Churachandpur daily for attendance, it stated. His pay and allowances is restricted to the subsistence allowances admissible as per the rules, it added.
