School chowkidar convicted in sexual assault case gets 19-month jail term

A school chowkidar from Haorang Khunou, Imphal West district was convicted on April 29 in a case of sexual assault on a minor on April 10, 2018.

The Special Judge, Fast Track Special Court (POCSO) No 1, Imphal West on Saturday sentenced a school chowkidar to one year and seven-month rigorous imprisonment. He was convicted of sexually assaulting a seven-year-old minor under section 10 of POCSO Act.

The culprit, Mayengbam Sonamani Meitei, 55, son of (L) M Pishak Meitei of Haorang Khunou, Imphal West district was convicted on April 29 in a case of sexual assault on a minor on April 10, 2018.

The IO of the case submitted the chargesheet under section 10 of POCSO Act and the court framed charges against him under the section.

During the sentence hearing, counsel of the accused prayed for minimum punishment under section 10 of POCSO Act.

After hearing the submission, the court sentenced the convicted accused to five years' rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000. However, with the accused already in custody for three years and five months and nine days, the days he has been in custody was set off and he was given one year and seven months' rigorous imprisonment.

The court further directed the state government to pay Rs 1 lakh to the minor from the victim compensation fund for the purpose of compensation and rehabilitation of the victim under section 357 CrPC.
