Riots break out after student was caught cheating in Class-12 examination

An altercation broke out between students and school authorities after a student was found cheating in the exam at South East Manipur Higher Secondary School in Chandel.

Riots broke out among students of St Joseph Higher Secondary School, Kuraopokpi appearing for Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination at South East Manipur Higher Secondary School centre, Komlathabi in Chandel district after a student was allegedly caught cheating.

According to sources, on the second day of the HSSLC examination conducted by COHSEM, the students of St Joseph Higher Secondary School were taking examinations for Alternative English/Manipuri/Thadou Kuki subjects at the SEM Higher Secondary School centre, Komlathabi in Chandel district.

Forty-five minutes into the exam, the invigilator caught a student allegedly using a crib sheet and cheating in the exam, after which an altercation broke out between the students and the school authorities, the sources said.

The situation quickly escalated into a riot with all the students of St Joseph School refusing to take their examination, the sources said.

The sources further said that enraged students of St Joseph School stormed the examination centre at Sinanu Higher Secondary School, Maringphai, Pallel and obstructed the SEM Higher Secondary School students from taking their examination.

Soon after the students of SEM Higher Secondary School returned to their own school, further altercation ensued, at which a police team led by SP Chandel and ASP Chandel arrived to control the situation, as per sources.  The police team escorted the students to their examination centre so that they may proceed in taking their examination, the sources added.
