The Zeliangrong Naga community and other communities in Delhi observed the 91st Haipou Jadonang martyrdom anniversary at Nagaland House and paid rich tributes to the legendary freedom fighter who fought against oppression.
"Naga freedom fighter Haipou Jadonang fought for complete freedom for the oppressed... The slogan raised by Haipou Jadonang - "Makaamei rui Guangtu puni" (The sons of the soil will reign or indigenous people will govern themselve) has a universal significance. It is not only for the Zeliangrong or Nagas alone but for the human race," social worker Mathiupuang Gonmei said, speaking at the occasion.
Also speaking at the event, former president of the Naga Students' Union, Delhi (NSUD) Isaac Charenamai said there is no point in observing martyrdom day without actually honouring the freedom fighter. Haipou Jadonang's vision was to fight against injustice and oppression and to attain self governance.
Charenamai also called upon the Zeliangrong people to take a collective stand against injustice and oppression, while Gonmei urged the people to embrace the great leader's vision and ideologies.
The event that began with the lighting of candles by social activist Linda Newme concluded successfully despite rain playing spoilsport.
The event was jointly organised by the Zeliangrong students' Union, Delhi (ZSUD) and Zeliangrong Welfare Association, Delhi (ZWAD). It was attended by hundreds of Zeliangrong people from all walks of life residing in Delhi.
