Rescued over 6,500 people from floods in Manipur: Assam Rifles

Assam Rifles carried out flood rescue operation ‘JALRAHAT’ in various affected areas and rescued and evacuated more than 6,500 people including women and children from areas adversely affected by the flood in Manipur, including Dewlahland, Thangal Bazar, North AOC and Mantripukhri.

The activity was carried out in wake of the recent floods in Manipur, triggered by Cyclone Remal, which left a trail of devastation, displaced thousands of people, leaving them stranded in the affected areas, the IGAR(S) stated in a release.

The operation began on Tuesday night and as first responders, 16 columns of Assam Rifles were deployed round the clock to rescue and evacuate those in need, it stated. The teams utilised specialized equipment and employed advanced rescue techniques to reach those trapped in the floodwaters, it stated.

It mentioned that during the operation a team of Assam Rifles managed to successfully rescue a 78-year-old paralysed elderly man from Tangkhul Lane, Imphal, who was found stranded in the flood-affected area. It added that the security forces has rescued 52 individuals, including 42 immobile and aged residents from Mother Teresa Institute, 21 neuro patients from Raj Medicity Hospital, and around 200 people from Minuthong during the operation.

The IGAR(S) highlighted the initiatives taken by Assam Rifles, stating that they undertook critical infrastructure repair work, including securing Thanthek village after a breach in the Khabi River under Nambol Police Station in Bishnupur district on Saturday. It added that repair efforts were also undertaken assiduously at Heingang and Khambam bridges on Thursday.

The security forces also carried out sanitization and disinfection drives, including DDT spray and distribution of mosquito repellents to prevent water borne diseases, it maintained. It further said that over 5,000 food packets and 8,000 water bottles have been distributed to those affected by the floods. It added that snake bite victims have also been rescued and provided medical aid in Imphal and Thoubal districts.

The Assam Rifles have been working tirelessly round the clock to restore normalcy by providing relief to the distraught and stranded populace and also assisted the district administration in restoration of essential services, the release said. It further reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to serve and protect the people, embodying the values of professionalism, compassion, and resilience that define the nation.
