Repolling for outer Manipur ends peacefully

A voter turnout of 81.16 per cent was recorded.

The repoll conducted at six polling stations in the Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency, following incidents of EVM vandalism, threat and intimidation by unknown miscreants during second phase of Lok Sabha polls on 26 April, ended peacefully with voter turnout of 81.16 per cent by 5 pm on Tuesday.

The repoll was conducted at four polling stations from Ukhrul district, one each from Chingai and Karong assembly.

There was no report of any violence except voters at 47/33 polling station of Oinam under Karong constituency in Senapati district in Outer Manipur could not commence voting till 10 am due to a reported heated exchange between supporters of NPF and independent Kho John. However, the voting started with enhanced security.

For five polling stations in Ukhrul began under tight security. Anyone without an approved I-card was not allowed to vote.

Repoll began at 7 am and the repolling was carried out smoothly under the vigilant watch of stringent security arrangements, with no untoward incidents reported.

During repoll, 80-year-old Hormila Shaiza cast her vote at 44/50 Leishiphanit polling station in Ukhrul.

During the initial polling held on April 26, 76.06 per cent of the total 4.84 lakh eligible voters had exercised their franchise across 13 out of the 28 assembly segments constituting the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency. The remaining 15 segments, along with the entire Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat, had participated in the electoral process during the first phase conducted on April 19.
