The Government of India has announced the names of Padma Shri award recipients 2024 on the eve of Republic Day.
Machihan Sasha, renowned Potter from Nungbi (Longpi) village in Ukhrul district is the sole awardee in the list who will be awarded the Padma Shri.
Machihan Sasa, a master craftsman hailing from Nungbi Kajui (Longpi Kajui) village in Ukhrul district, Manipur, has dedicated his life to preserving and promoting the ancient art of Longpi black pottery.
Born on April 10, 1950, in a region primarily driven by agriculture and traditional occupations, Machihan has emerged as a pioneer in the field of black stone pottery, contributing significantly to the cultural heritage of Manipur.
Machihan learned the art of pottery-making from his father, Kuishim Sasa, at the early age of 20. Since 1970, he has been actively involved in crafting unique black stone pottery using a combination of ground black serpentine stone and special brown clay found exclusively in Longpi. Machihan’s innovative approach to pottery, particularly the black stone variety, has gained recognition not only locally but also nationally and internationally. His pottery is known for its rustic appeal, non-stick qualities, and versatility in cooking.
The Padma Awards are India’s second-highest civilian honors, recognizing exceptional contributions in various fields. The awards are conferred by the President of India at a traditional function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan in March or April.
