Rapist sentenced to 14-year imprisonment

The accused was convicted for raping an underage girl in 2008.

Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) for Crime against Women, Manipur on Wednesday sentenced a man convicted for raping an underage girl in 2008 to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 14 years.

The court announced the sentence for convict Maimom Abo, 38, son of (L) Kalamu of Sanjenbam Makha Leikai.

During the hearing, the prosecution submitted to the Court that on May 16, 2008, the victim’s mother filed a report to the OC of Lamsang police station. The report said that Abo sexually assaulted the girl during March-May of the same year.

Based on the report, the Police Station registered a case and launched an investigation.
As the trial could not be conducted in the Sessions Court, the Judicial Magistrate first class, Imphal West, submitted the case to Sessions Judge Imphal West, which the latter received on July 25, 2013.

On November 16, 2015, Sessions Judge Imphal West framed charges against the accused under Section 376 of IPC.

On July 26, 2018 the case was transferred to Additional Sessions Judge (FTC) for Crime against Women, Manipur and received on August 18 the same year.

According to the charges, the accused sexually assaulted the victim on March 3, 2008 around 2.30 pm at his residence, and again on April 24 around 1 pm at Makhong Turel Mapal.

The accused again assaulted the victim at a canal along Sanjenbam-Leitong road around 2.30 pm on May 1 and on May 15 around 11 am at the residence of another victim.

After the charges were framed against the accused, he was informed of the charges in detail and asked whether he accepted the same or not. The court set off 206 days from days of sentence, as he was in jail for 206 days.
