The 24-hour public curfew imposed on Saturday over failure to convene an emergency Assembly session affected normal lives in Imphal City even as tension was seen heightened in many areas due to the Kwakta incident wherein three were brutally killed by Kuki militants.

The curfew was imposed by the Coordinating Committee of 24 Assembly Constituencies, MACKMAL, Union of Social Upliftment and CFC, Thongju.

During a meeting of the committee held on July 27, it was resolved to demand the state government to convene an emergency Assembly session by August 2 and adopt a resolution to protect Manipur’s integrity, and oppose separate administration demands.

The resolution further mentioned that the Manipur Legislative Assembly should be forwarded for discussion in the ongoing Parliamentary session.

Following the public curfew, the main roads of Imphal City were seen blocked by the bandh supporters by burning tyres, wooden blocks and others.

A large number of bandh supporters came onto the streets and blocked roads including Tiddim Road, Ayangpalli Road, Maiyai Lambi, Uripok Road, Sagolband Road and many others.

Earlier, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey on July 28 assured Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Co-ordinating Committee for Peace to convene a special session of Manipur Legislative Assembly in a week.

However, amid the pressure from the people and CSOs to convene an emergency Assembly session to resolve the ongoing crisis in the state, Manipur Cabinet recommended to the Governor Anusuiya Uikey for summoning the 4th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on August 21.

Due to the public curfew tension escalated in the city and the state home department immediately cancelled curfew relaxation from 10.30 am on Saturday.
