Voicing dissent over the unwavering ‘maun vrat’ or vow of silence of the central government and the fumbling actions of the state government in reining in the debacle in Manipur which has crossed two months, several women in Naoremthong, Imphal West on Wednesday staged protests and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Assam Rifles at several locations in Imphal.

During the protest at Naoremthong Khullem Leikai and Naoremthong Laishram Leirak, the protesters raised slogans such as Narendra Modi Murdabad, Amit Shah Murdabad and demanded authorities to remove Assam Rifles from Manipur.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the protest at Naoremthong Khullem Leikai, a woman protester lambasted the state government for remaining inactive and instead strategising mediocre moves for political mileage during the whole crisis.

“The chief minister is supposed to lead the people in both good and hard times but N Biren and all the MLAs are fumbling to lead the state during the crisis; even when the state is burning they are busy professing their allegiance to their political leaders and throwing political insults at each other,” she said.

The protesters urged all leaders to reflect on the issue at hand seriously and do away with their petty political catfights.

“How many people need to die before they act; it is because of their utter failure that the people started to take the law into their own hands,” the protester asked.

She also reminded the government not to disregard the anger mounting in the state and further advised the government to take appropriate actions swiftly.

Meanwhile, a protester at Naoremthong Laishram Leirak lashed out at the 10 Kuki MLAs and said, “Central forces have a rough history in Manipur, the wounds have not healed and now with their alleged biased security measures they are pouring salt on old wounds.”
