Police alleged of demanding money from victim’s family

The family members of a victim of a hit-and-run case alleged that Heingang Police Station demanded money when they went to collect the victim’s vehicle from the police station.

The family members of a victim of a hit-and-run case on Wednesday urged the authorities concerned to book the culprits, while alleging that Heingang Police Station demanded money when they went to collect the victim’s vehicle from the police station.

In a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul, Imphal, Ngangbam Reva of Loitang Sandum in Imphal West narrated that around 9.42 pm on February 16, her husband, Ngangbam Ibomcha met an accident at Chumbreithong near IGAR South gate, Imphal West. Her husband was hit by a vehicle which immediately fled from the spot without showing any concern to the victim, she said.

As the incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Heingang police station, the vehicle of her husband was seized by the said police station, she said.

Her husband suffered multiple injuries including broken bones and teeth, she said. However, the culprits involved in the incident have not been arrested till date. She added that her husband is the only earning person in the family and a mason by profession but he stopped working after the incident.

To run the family, she started selling vegetables at Khwairamband Bazar as a street vendor, she said. She even borrowed money for her husband’s treatment. The vehicle involved in the accident is still in the custody of Heingang police station, she mentioned.

When she asked to get the vehicle, police personnel of the said police station demanded money which she did not have, she added. She appealed to the authority concerned to book the culprits involved in the incident and added that the road mishap occurred near the residence of a VIP. If the police are willing to nab the culprits, then they could have easily nabbed the culprits with the help of CCTV installed along the national highway, she said.
