In an attempt to defeat the BJP in the upcoming 2024 MP election, like-minded opposition parties in Manipur have joined forces under one single platform and decided to produce a common candidate, Manipur JD-U president Ksh Biren said in Imphal on Friday.

Ksh Biren was speaking to the media after the inauguration of the state JD-U new headquarter located at Shri Shri Govindaji Temple road in Imphal East.

He informed that the meeting of all opposition parties, including the Congress, the Communist party and the JD-U was held recently. The meeting resolved to join the movement undertaken by the leaders of the respective parties in the Centre to defeat the BJP for once and all, he added.

Regarding the five JD-U MLAs who joined the BJP, he said that the disqualification case filed by the party before the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly has been pending since the last three months.

As a result, the party has consulted with a senior advocate of the Supreme Court to decide the further course of action that can be taken up legally, he added.

Hosting the JD-U flag and cutting of the ceremonial ribbon marked the inauguration of the new headquarter.

The programme was also attended by executive member of JD-U State Unit and former minister Nimaichand Luwang among other office bearers of the unit.

It is worth mentioning that the JD-U won six seats in the Manipur Assembly Election 2022; however; five of the MLAs had joined the BJP soon after winning the election.
