A combined team of Imphal West district commando and Narcotics cell, Imphal West seized as many as 5,880 bottles of Phensegrip Cough Syrup and arrested one person on Tuesday, sources said.
The arrested person has been identified as one Oinam Ratan, 36, son of late Oinam Jugin of Kwakeithel Moirang Purel, Imphal West district, the police said.
Superintendent of police, Imphal West, Ksh Shivananda told the media at its office that based on a tip-off about some unidentified persons transporting illegal items at Tera Khuraijam area, the combined team led by inspector L Bikramjit Singh rushed to the said area and raided at the residence of one Longjam Premjit alias Goroba Meitei, 36, son of late L Herojit Meitei of Tera Khuraijam Leirak, Imphal West.
The said person was found inside the house and he was detained for spot verification.
While searching the house, the combined team found 49 carton boxes containing the cough syrup composing 10 mg of codeine.
On questioning, Ratan revealed that the carton boxes belonged to him. He further revealed that the said carton boxes were to be delivered at Lilong area.
The entire carton boxes were opened in the presence of a civil witness and each carton box was found to contain 120 bottles of the cough syrup. The entire carton boxes, including the cough syrup, were seized for further investigation.
The police team is conducting investigation to find out the kingpin of the consignment, said Shivakanta.
The MRP of each bottle is Rs 186.65; however, it is sold at around Rs 300 per bottle in the black market, police said.
