Amid speculation and high anticipation for the announcement of the new Manipur chief minister, Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Kiren Rijiju arrived at the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal Sunday. The flight, which was scheduled to arrive at 11 am, was delayed by more than an hour and landed at 12.11 pm.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to announce the state BJP legislature party leader as she and Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju have been appointed as Central observer and co-observer respectively for the election of the BJP Legislature Party leader in the state. The BJP Parliamentary Board announced the appointment on March 14.

The two Central BJP leaders were accompanied by state Manipur Caretaker Chief Minister N Biren Singh and state legislators Th Biswajit and Y Khemchand, who were called to New Delhi by the Central leadership on Saturday.
Before leaving Delhi for Imphal, Sitharaman took to Twitter and announced the visit to Manipur on Sunday, confirming that she will be joined by BJP leaders Kiren Rijiju, Bhupendra Yadav and Sambit Patra. She will be meeting state BJP karyakartas in Imphal.
"Looking forward to being in Manipur today. Meet with@BJP4Manipur karyakarta. Joining me are Shri@KirenRijiju,@byadavbjp ji and@sambitswaraj ji," she tweeted.
Others who arrived along with Sitharaman and Rijiju included Central BJP leaders Sambit Patra and Bhupendra Yadav, Karma SZ Lhasunga, Sonam Gechen Angola and MP Leishemba Sanajoba.
Biren and Sharda, on their return to Imphal after meeting Central party leaders in Delhi on March 10, had said that Central observer Nirmala Sitharaman will announce the state BJP legislature party leader after the Holi festival.
