Naga Women Union condemns harassment

The Naga Women Union, Manipur reminded that women are not commodities or stuff which can be compensated with money.

The Naga Women Union, Manipur on Thursday condemned the reported incidents of harassment against the Nagas especially, hapless women and ladies and called to put an end to the same.

President of The Union Ch Priscilla Thiumai, in a release stated that amid the high and elated mood of Christmas celebration circling the air, unbridled and unchecked prevalence of indulgence to coercive behaviour allegedly by armed miscreants in various areas and localities of state disguised as taxation which is not less than extortion is sounding a call to darker and grimmer Manipur even when every the public is striving to restore peace in the state.

On pretext of the status quo, armed malefactors and miscreants creating chaos in the valley and hills have not spared, targeting women of the Naga community, physically harassing and abducting them, it accused and termed it as unacceptable.

It asserted that the cases of demands, threats, abductions for ransoms on innocent civilians, especially women, is a villainous act that will not serve the larger aspiration of the state and the nation. It added that this notoriety will lead to nowhere but deep prejudices to whichever community the miscreants belong.

It claimed that the miscreants are reportedly operating in groups or units and undertaking a serious yet unwarranted route to calamitous doom for the state of Manipur. It further maintained that extortions and abductions are not a sign of a civilised society.

It fervently appealed to all the Naga organised civil societies to be more sober in negotiation of all types of crime against women. It also reminded that women are not commodities or stuff which can be compensated with money and stressed the need for judicial expedition and legal actions against the offenders to avoid such incidents in future.
