Zilla Parishads, Pradhans and Ward members of Thoubal district carried out a protest rally in solidarity with the agitation spearheaded by the Manipur State Panchayat Parishad (MSPP) from February 21.
The protest was carried out in Thoubal district headquarter demanding the government to fulfil the demands of the local bodies at the earliest. Prior to the rally, the protestors also staged a sit-in at Khangabok.
Placards which read, “Conduct Panchayat Election”, “Give more teeth to the Panchayat”, “Hand over the material component of Rs 302 crore for MGNREGA, Financial year 2021-22” and “Government should give out the wages component of Rs 406 crore for MGNREGA, Financial year 2021-22” were displayed during the protest.
The protest led by Thoubal Zilla Parishad Adakshya, Hasina Begum, tried to throng Thoubal DC office complex. However, only three PRI members were allowed to meet Thoubal DC after the protest was stopped by Thoubal District Police.
Speaking to the media after meeting with the DC, former member of Charangpat Zilla Parishad, Ph. Heramni appealed to the government to fulfil their demands at the earliest. He further said that DC Thoubal assured the protestors to table the issue to the authorities concerned.
It may be mentioned that an MSPP team led by president Md Abdul Latif went to Delhi on February 1 to give their memorandum to the Union Minister and state Minister (MoS) after the state government failed to fulfill their demands by January 31, 2023.
