For the first time, particularly in Manipur's Tamenglong district, a mobile app to monitor the implementation of a mid- day meal scheme was launched in Tamenglong on Saturday.

It was launched by the district administration with the aim to provide regular and hygienic food to the students.

On the occasion, Tamenglong deputy commissioner L Angshim Dangshawa said the idea of making mobile app to monitor mid-day meal schemes struck upon him when he went to survey mid-day meal scheme implementation.

Nine months ago, the implementation of the mid-day meal scheme survey reportedly showed some headmasters distributing raw food, including rice, dal and potatoes, to the students under the mid-day meal scheme.  He felt the need to do something as he can not go around to see in every school.  It took six months to complete the app, he said.

“Mid-day meal is to provide good and healthy food to students to keep a healthy body. Mid- day meal also aims to retain the students in school and give faith to the school. Yes, some students bring food from home but, due to unhygienic practices such as storing the food for a long time causes the food to get spoiled,” DC L Angshim said.

He said the food should be cooked in school by maintaining hygiene and served to the students while still warm to build a healthy body. If the students are not healthy, they cannot study, he added.

Appreciating the efforts of some headmasters who spent pocket money due to shortage of funds and irregular supply of food grains, DC L Angshim said that through the mobile app, the mid-day meal scheme implementation will be monitored in Tamenglong district.

He said that the mobile monitoring app would be given to all the school principals and headmasters to update the daily basis of mid day meal activities.

The launching programme was attended by all sub divisional officers of Tamenglong district including Zonal Education Officer N Christopher Abonpou, ADC Tamenglong chief executive officer Kachamthai Faiga Gangmei.
