The Manipuri Meitei Association, Bangalore (MMAB), emphasizing the paramount importance of free and fair elections, has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure the integrity of the electoral process in Manipur.
MMAB, in a letter to the Election Commissioner of India on Monday, appealed for publicizing and sensitizing robust measures implemented to ensure voters’ safety and rights protection, fostering confidence among the electorate and preventing untoward incidents.
The association also highlighted suggestions to ensure free and fair elections in Manipur, including addressing ongoing violence since May 3, 2023 and sought clarification on special arrangements to instil confidence in voters amid the prevailing insecurity; dealing with Influx of migrants to ensure the legitimacy of voters and prevent voter fraud, it stated.
It also stressed the need to enhance security measures to provide a safe environment for voters, candidates, and election officials; ensuring free movement of candidates, election officials, and security forces to enable in conducting a successful election and ensuring voter safety as well as measures to prevent a significant drop in voter turnout.
MMAB also commended the Election Commissioner of India for announcement of the Lok Sabha Election and appreciated the efforts made to organize the largest Adult Franchise targeting 96.8 crores voters across India, it mentioned. It also acknowledged ECI’s meticulous preparations taken for the forthcoming elections, particularly in Manipur.
