Elderly parents who are mistreated by their sons or daughters can file a complaint free of cost to the Deputy Commissioner or SDO and they will get the response of the complaint within 90 days, professor Chongtham Seibalini, Royal Academy of Law, said on Wednesday.
She said so during an awareness programme conducted on Wednesday at the Shelter Home run by Nambol Women Help Organisation.
She said that the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizen Act was passed in 2007 to provide “maintenance” which includes provisions for food, clothing, residence and medical attendance and treatment.
‘Welfare’ means provision for food, healthcare, recreation centres and other amenities necessary for the senior citizens and parents, she added.
She said that for speedy disposal of any complaint without spending money for hiring advocates, elderly parents or senior citizens can file complaints to the deputy commissioner or SDO of the concerned district.
Under this Act, a tribunal will initiate the application which should be disposed of within 90 days from the date of service of notice of application, she added.
The awareness was given to old aged persons.
