Suspected Kuki militants, dressed in army uniform, attempted to abduct a military engineering services contractor from the entry gate in between Leimakhong Army camp and Ex-serviceman colony, Leimakhong Chingmang under the jurisdiction of Sekmai Police station in Imphal West district on Thursday, sources said.
According to the sources, two suspected Kuki militants, dressed in Army uniform, tried to abduct one 65-year-old Nongthonbam Thoiba, son of N Yaima of Kanto Sabal at around 4 pm from Leimakhong Army gate number 3.
Thoiba was called by military engineering services on Thursday to the camp to discuss work, the sources said, adding that he reportedly told the officials that he might face Kuki militants on his way to the camp but was assured by the officials that he would be safe as Army ROP are on strict vigil.
After being assured of no harm, Thoiba went to the camp on a Mahendra Jeeto but he was stopped at Gate No. 3 after crossing Gate No 1 and 2 by two people on scooty, dressed in army uniform. They questioned him why he was in their area and that they would have been killed if they had entered the Meitei area, he said.
Thoiba added that they threatened him to come with them to Khunkhu village near Leimakhong Bridge. However, he escaped when military engineering services officials and Kumaon Regiment personnel showed up in the area, he said.
However, to his utter dismay, the two allegedly threatened him in front of the army personnel who were on duty at the entry gate, he said, adding that the two wheeler has been seized by army personnel but the two people have not been arrested yet.
A public meeting will be held at Kanto Sabal on Friday regarding the unfortunate incident, the sources added.
