A heated altercation reportedly broke out between meira paibis and army personnel at Pangantabi in Kakching district on Monday after a captain of 37 Assam Rifles stationed at the area allegedly warned of registering FIRs against the meira paibis.

According to sources, demands over bringing extra army personnel to the camp triggered the confrontation.

Speaking to the media, one Meira Paibi said that as per an agreement between meira paibis and the 37 Assam Rifles B Company in Pangaltabi, the former created no obstruction whatsoever in the movement of Assam Rifles in the area as well as in their duties and other essential activities.

She asserted that the Assam Rifles on Monday notified that they will bring in nine personnel in place of eight personnel who were to leave the camp. However, the meira paibis denied accepting the same, stating that they had agreed on not bringing additional personnel to the camp earlier, she stated.

A captain of 37 Assam Rifles responded by demanding the meira paibis to give their signatures on a piece of paper and even warned of lodging an FIR against the meira paibis, she said. An intense scuffle between the meira paibis and the Assam rifles followed, she added.

Upon hearing the news of the scuffle, many womenfolk from nearby villages in Pangantabi stormed the area and held protests, demanding immediate removal of the captain from the camp.

Subsequently, a team of Wangoo Police personnel including the OC and 28 sector Assam Rifles Officer rushed to the area and attempted to pacify the irate mob, as per sources. However, it is unclear what agreement the two sides reached.
