The Meetei Council Moreh (MCM) celebrated its 30th foundation day at its temporary office in Lamphel on Tuesday.
MCM president M Thoiba Meetei said that the council was formed on March 12, 1995 with an aim to ensure all round development of the Meeteis residing in Moreh as well as to maintain communal harmony among the different communities in the border town.
He also highlighted the aims and objectives of the council, and said that ever since its inception, MCM has been striving to boost sports, education and economic growth of the citizens and strengthen cultural integrity of the Meeteis.
He claimed that the Meeteis of Moreh town have been taking crucial roles to safeguard the territorial boundary of the state in the eastern corridor of the country. However, unprecedented violence erupted on May 3, 2023, with Kuki narco terrorists attacking the Meeteis in the town, burning their houses, leaving many displaced in their own land.
He noted that Moreh Meetei victims who have been reeling under 11 months of the ongoing crisis are facing immense hardships and challenges in achieving sustainable livelihoods. He pointed out the conditions of the displaced victims seeking refuge at the relief camps, stating that students do not have access to proper education or essential needs.
He also condemned the security forces for allegedly remaining mute spectators when the public properties were burned down. He also accused the central government for turning blind eye to the conflict and asked if there was any hidden geo-political agenda.
Thoiba appealed to the government to initiate necessary measures for resettlement of the displaced Meetei victims and expedite steps to resolve the issue and restore peace in the state. He also called upon the Meeteis of Moreh to fight in unity to safeguard the town.
