The Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) strongly opposed the Education minister’s announcement to rename the ‘MeeteI Mayek’ to ‘Manipuri Mayek’ and demanded the minister to retract his statement.
According to MEELAL, Education Minister S Rajen announced on Monday that he will take up initiatives to rename the ‘Meetei Mayek’ to ‘Manipuri Mayek’ considering how the spoken language of the script is a lingua franca of all the different communities settling in the state.
Such a statement made by an Education minister is unfortunate and surprising.
The act is considered as highly ‘immodest’, said advisor of MEELAL Moirangthem Naudalenkhomba while speaking to the media at the MEELAL office in Imphal West on Wednesday.
The minister should keep in mind that many Meetei fore-fathers have sacrificed their lives to safeguard and promote Meetei Mayek, he said.
The general public along with the MEELAL are set for agitation if the minister tries to rename Meetei Mayek into Manipuri Mayek, he added.
