At least three people were killed and four others sustained bullet injuries in a gunbattle between Kuki militants and Phayeng village Volunteer Force at Chiru and Polen villages under the jurisdiction of Kangchup Police Station in Kangpokpi district on Monday.
As per reports, the shootout at Chiru and Polen villages began around 4 am and contiued till 10.30 am. Those injured and the dead bodies were evacuated by 22 Assam Rifles.
The deceased have been identified as one 55-year-old Angom Romesh alias Popo, son of Mukta of Phayeng Kharang Awang Leikai; 40-year-old Angom Rakesh, son of Tembi of Phayeng Sabal Leikai and Pukhrambam Nikhil of Khundrakpam Lai Mamang. They are kept at JNIMS mortuary for post-mortem.
The injured persons have been identified as 27-year-old Salam Hitler, son of S Kulamani of Uripok Tourangbam Leikai; 48-year-old Sanasam Gunajit, son of Devajit of Naoremthong; 22-year-old Kenat Longjam and 35-year-old Angom Chaoba, son of Gunamani of Phayeng Kharang Awang Leikai. They are undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital.
In another incident, days after the village of Nazareth village near Sugnu town was abandoned by its residents, one villager was reportedly killed after receiving gunshots from suspected Kuki militants while several others sustained injuries at Serou on Monday.
According to ground reports, the incident occurred when a group of suspected Kuki militants ambushed a combined team which was trying to push into militant territory at Serou on Monday midnight.
The report further added that the suspected militants sprayed bullets at the combined team, killing one and injuring several villagers who had tailed the team to access their residents which had been completely burned down by suspected Kuki militants at Serou.
Meanwhile, a Nepali shepherd was also injured in Luwang Sangol under the jurisdiction of Sekmai Police station at around 11.30 am on Monday. He was allegedly shot by Kuki militants in the chest which pierced through his back.
The injured has been identified as Damarmani Bhatarai (68), son of Balbir of Kanglatongbi Hatikhowa. He was rushed to a hospital in Imphal, sources said.
