Manipur Unrest: Security personnel injured in IED blast

Churachandpur: A personnel of the 9th Assam Rifles was injured in a bomb blast suspected to be planted by militants at Kulbung village under Phoubakchao Ikhai police station on Friday.

A day after a commando personnel was killed and five others were injured during a gunfight at Tronglaobi, Bishnupur district, one personnel of 9th Assam Rifles was injured in a bomb blast suspected to be planted by Kuki militants at Kulbung village under Phoubakchao Ikhai police station in Churachandpur on Friday.

Sources said that the incident occurred at around 5 am on Friday while a team of 9th Assam Rifles, Sitapur, COB post approached towards Kulbung village for domination after various incidents took place in connection with the ongoing communal clash.

It is reported that when the team was about to reach Kulbung village, they detected a wire lying on the ground. When one of personnel tried to pull the wire, the bomb exploded in which one AR personnel received minor injury.

Police sources said the injured was evacuated to IGAR south for further treatment. The injured is reported to be in a stable condition, they added.

Meanwhile, a gunfight reportedly took place on Friday Morning in Chanung area, Imphal East district which falls under the jurisdiction of Sagolmang police station.

Locals of the area reported that the gunfight started around 4 am when groups of suspected Kuki militants allegedly fired several rounds from a nearby hilltop towards the Chanung village. The villagers retaliated with several rounds of fire from their licence guns towards the suspected Kuki militants.

The exchange of fire took place for several minutes; however, teams of Imphal East district commando rushed to the spot and joined the gunfight. The gunfight reportedly continued for around an hour and the suspected Kuki militants fled from the spot to a nearby hill.

No casualty has been reported from both sides yet, the sources added.
