Myanmar Army steps up operations against Kuki militants

Even as search operations intensified in Moreh and its surrounding villages, a police commando team was attacked by Kuki militants near the border gate No 1.

Meanwhile, the Myanmar Army has stepped up its vigil on the border for illegal cross-overs and had sealed the border according to reports reaching here.

A team of Manipur Police Commando, Moreh were shot at by miscreants who came on a two-wheeler vehicle while they were patrolling in Tengnoupal district on Sunday. There were no casualties reported.

On receiving an input that miscreants were planning to attack the Moreh Police IB Post, a commando team of Moreh Police conducted area domination patrolling along St George School Road for security coverage around 10.20 am on Sunday, as per sources.

When the police team reached the junction near New Moreh Church around 10.40 am, the team came across a two-wheeler vehicle with two persons who were coming towards them.

When the police team shouted at them to stop, the vehicle took a left turn towards ICP Bypass Road and fired two rounds at the police, one of which struck one of the bullet proof vehicles, said the police.

The police retaliated and fired eight rounds of blank fire in the air, during which the two assailants left the two wheeler there and ran away inside some of the nearby houses. On examining the situation, some bypassers on the road were checked and then escorted into a house for safe cover.

Later, the vehicle Suzuki Burgman bearing regd no. MN06S D5279 was seized by the team and then left the place and proceeded back to the Police IB at around 11.3 am. An FIR has been registered for necessary legal action.

On Saturday, combined security forces apprehended seven active cadres of the United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF) in possession with arms and ammunition during search operations conducted at border hill areas of Moreh.

The armed miscreants trained under the command of one Lalet Kuki commander and Haokin commander UKLF were apprehended during search operations conducted by a combined team of special commando unit, Moreh CDO, 5 IRB, Thoubal CDO, Kakching CDO, 5th Assam Rifles at Ziong Veng, Yangoupokpi, Seljang and Mongjang Village from 6 am till 12.30 pm.

Across the border, Myanmar army reportedly recovered a huge cache of weapons and ammunition stored by Kuki National Organization (KNO) and its armed wing KNA.

Myanmar border forces had also reportedly killed four Kuki militants who had crossed over from the Indian border and made a few arrests in the last few days.
