Manipur Unrest: Militants attack Tanjeng, four commandos injured

A bulletproof vehicle of the Manipur commandos was hit by landmines allegedly planted by suspected Kuki militants that exploded as it moved in to Tanjeng for area domination.

As many as four Manipur commandos sustained injuries in an attack launched by Kuki militants at Tangjeng under Kumbi assembly constituency in Bishnupur district on Wednesday.

The incident occurred around 1.30 pm when a team of six commando personnel of Bishnupur district moved in to Tangjeng for area domination.

The injured have been identified as one sub-inspector Gyanendro Salam, 40, son of late S Mangijao of MoirangKhunou, Bishnupur district; Elialong, 34, son of Namheiting of Senapati Kenalu; Huidrom Gunamani, 44, son of H Angouba of Yumnam Huidrom and Janaranjan, 27, son of Ranjit of Wangoo Laipham Khunjao Awang Leikai.

Police reported that the commando team was led by SI Gyanendro. When they reached Tangjeng, some suspected Kuki militants attacked their bulletproof vehicle with landmines. The personnel were sitting on the rear of the vehicle when the mines exploded. The splinters penetrated the vehicle and injured the personnel.

Gyanendro received injury at his right calf and foot; Elialong received injury at right ankle and calf while Gunamani received minor injury on his right thigh.

Gyanendro and Elialong were admitted to Advance Hospital for treatment. Hospital authority reported that both the injured are undergoing treatment. As Gunamani received minor injuries, he was admitted to Primary Health Centre, Moirang. Commando personnel Janaranjan has been admitted to RIMS Hospital.

Reliable source reported that the People Defense Force (PDF), a Myanmar-based militants and the United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF) that was established in connection with the demand of Kukiland are involved in gunfight that has been ongoing in Sugnu, Tangjeng and Serou area since Sunday.

During the incident, other commando teams in a bulletproof Rakshak rushed to Tangjeng but the ignition of the vehicle failed while they were attacked.

The commandos, who were on the vehicle, were safely evacuated; however, the vehicles were pushed down at a cliff by suspected Kuki militants, police said.
