Manipur Unrest: Kuki militants continue with their attacks

More than 50 bombs and guns were fired at Senjam Chirang and 6th MR personnels deployed at Senjam Chirang said that sniper rifle bullets were fired from Harothel at around 7.40 am on Sunday.

Kuki militants carried out attacks on different Meitei villages after two Kuki militants died on Saturday in a gunfight at hill range of Kamu village under the jurisdiction of Maphou Dam Police Station.

Reports said that the attacks were carried out at different areas of Senjam Chirang under Sekmai Police Station. Koutruk and Kadangband areas under Lamshang Police station were also attacked. Kuki militants started attacking the villages by firing bombs and guns from Saturday night around 9 pm.

The attacks continued till Sunday morning but no casualties have been reported so far. 3rd IRB, 7th MR and Village Volunteers at Koutruk also retaliated to the attack and gunfight continued throughout the night.

Sources said that 6th MR stationed at Senjam Chirag Community Hall and 22nd Assam Rifles at Haraothel met with an agreement to control the situation side by side from last month. But, AR on Saturday informed the MR personnels that they could no longer control the Kukis. More than six bombs fired by the Kukis failed to explode but one bomb exploded near the MR barack and one sniper rifle bullet also hit the MR bunker.

Reports said that the location of the 6th MR personnel in Senjam Chirang is in danger as it can be easily attacked by the Kuki militants from Haraothel side. 67th Bn CRPF personnel stationed with the 6th MR did not fire a single bullet during the gunfight which went on throughout the night, saying that they did not receive any order from the higher authorities to retaliate to the attacks.

Manipur police bomb disposal squad detonated a 51mm bomb at Tendongyan hill under Sekmai PS on Sunday at around 11.30 am. The bomb was fired by the Kuki militants at Senjam Chirang at around 9.50 am on Sunday, which failed to explode.

It may be mentioned that two Kuki militants died in a gunfight between village volunteers on Saturday. The deceased have been identified as Kamminlal Lupheng, 23, son of Paolet Lupheng of Nongdam Kuki under Maphou Dam PS Kangpokpi district and Kamlensat Lunkim, 22, son of Thangkhomang Lunkim of Bongjang village of Kangpokpi district.

On the other hand, Kuki militants also attacked Chingphei  in Ningthoukhong Kha Khunou and Molsang in Tronglaobi Maning under the jurisdiction of Moirang PS on Saturday between 6 pm to 7 pm.
