Manipur Unrest: Internet ban extended till May 26

The Internet ban in violence-hit Manipur has been extended till 3 pm of May 26

The Manipur government on Sunday extended the ban on Internet in the state for another five days till 3 pm of May 26, 2023 with immediate effect.

"There is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions for the public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the state," stated a release signed by Gyan Prakash, Commissioner (Home), GoM, in the name of the Governor.

The internet services banned include mobile data services, internet/data services including broadband viz. Reliance Jio Fiber, Airtel Xtreme Black, BSNL FTTH, etc and the internet/data service through VSATs of Bharatnet Phase II.

Following the ethnic violence that broke out in the state on May 3, the government had banned internet services in the state, and extended it in view of the prevailing tense situation.
