Manipur Chief Minister N Biren on Sunday dubbed the Kuki militants responsible for the recent attacks on unarmed civilians as terrorists and announced the initiation of a comprehensive counter-insurgency operation along with central forces against them with heavy weaponry such as two-inch mortars and helicopter surveillance.

Addressing the media at his secretariat in Imphal, Biren strongly condemned the use of sophisticated weapons including M16 rifles, AK47s and snipers by the Kuki militants to target unarmed civilians.

Describing their actions as acts of terrorism, he emphasised the government’s commitment to neutralising this threat. He informed that during various operations conducted in Litanpokpi, Serou, Sugnu, Yaingangpokpi and Torbung, a significant number of Kuki militants in combat attire were eliminated, besides the JAT Regiment also apprehended several individuals linked to the group.

The chief minister initially stated that 40 militants had been neutralised, but when pressed by the media, he revised the number to approximately 33.

To ensure the safety of the region, the government has identified additional vulnerable areas in the peripheral regions of the valley and has initiated the deployment of adequate security forces, he said.

Previously, security measures were concentrated in 38 identified vulnerable areas.

Responding to allegations that state forces faced restrictions in certain areas, the chief minister, who is also holding the portfolio of Home, clarified that the state forces operate under the direct jurisdiction of the Manipur Home department.

He emphasised that the state has a good number of well-trained personnel, and there are no limitations on their operations within the state’s territory.

Asserting that anyone attempting to undermine the integrity of Manipur would be treated as an enemy of the state, Biren reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicate the Kuki “terrorists” from Manipur.
