An emergency total shutdown was imposed by Rongmei Naga Council Manipur in Tamenglong District headquarters, Manipur against the indiscriminate firing on Thursday at Makuai (Atengba) village.

The shutdown order issued by Rongmei Naga Council Manipur president stated that as per the executive decision made on the aftermath of the incident that happened on Thursday at Makuai (Atengba) village in Tamenglong District, the troopers of 6th Assam Rifles had a tussle with the village folks and the subsequent indiscriminate firing took place which was highly condemnable.

“Rongmei Naga Council Manipur declared total shutdown in all the Rongmei’s inhabited areas, on March 15, 2024, as solidarity against such injustice,” it mentioned.

“The Rongmei Naga Students Organisation Manipur RNYOM is given the full authority to execute the said declaration at their own discretion; however, the progress should be kept informed to the RNCM Central Committee”, the order stated.

Students appearing HSLC exam, electricity, medical, fire department, marriage and religious duties are exempted from the purview of the declaration, it stated.

The shutdown came into effect at Rongmei inhabited areas, including Tamenglong district, Noney District Headquarter and National Highway-37, Nungba, Khoupum, Jiribam and some parts of Imphal from 12 noon to 6 pm.

All shops and markets were immediately closed down. There have been no untoward incidents till the filling of this report.

Meanwhile, the Chramram Segment Voice (CSV) has condemned the incident, stating that firing on innocent women folks of Chramram (Saramba) Segment villages at Makuai (Atengba) village Tamenglong district took place while a group of women held a peaceful protest to prevent the para-military personnel from halting the ongoing training of the village defense force.

“Such a reckless and unlawful act happened for the first time ever in our peaceful co-existence area of Chramram Segment,” stated a release.

Since the state machinery has failed and law and order has collapsed, the central and state security forces failed to protect people’s lives and properties, it stated.

The village defense forces have been raised in almost all Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur to protect the people, land, and resources of the Nagas, it mentioned.

“So, the Nagas also have every right to carry out any activities within our jurisdictions. Such unprovoked firing by Assam Rifles troopers upon innocent women was totally condemned and urged all the central, state and others forces not to create such unlawful acts in near future,” it mentioned.

The Chramram Segment Voice (CSV) strongly condemned such reprehensible behavior of the 6th AR and urged the Higher authority to look into the matter seriously and take Stern action against them, it mentioned.
