Manipur: Thadou body against recognition of Kukis, records reveal

Official records of the Thadou National Council, Manipur mentioned that the proposed bill for introduction in Parliament for recognition of certain tribes including Kuki or any Kuki will shatter the prevailing peaceful condition of tribes in Manipur.

Official records of the Thadou National Council, Manipur appealing to the Centre not to give recognition to several tribes, including the Kuki or any Kuki tribe, with a warning of an imminent danger of conflict and bloodshed have surfaced on Sunday.  

An appeal regarding the same was issued by president of Thadou National Council, Manipur, Paolen Haokip, on November 17, 1987 and addressed to Union Minister of State for Welfare, New Delhi, Rajendra Kumari Vajpaijee, as per the records.

It stated that the proposed bill for introduction in Parliament for recognition of certain tribes including Kuki or any Kuki will shatter the prevailing peaceful condition of tribes in Manipur.

It also stated that there is an imminent danger of conflict allegedly among the tribes to the extent of bloodshed, while appealing that the proposed bill for Manipur be dropped forthwith in public interest.  

The appeal also mentioned the tribes listed in the proposed bill for introduction in parliament for recognition of certain tribes including Kuki or Any Kuki including Aimol, Baite, Biate/Beite, Chiru, Chothe, Chonglai, Doungel, Gangte, Guite, Hangshing, Haokip, Hmar, Khongsai, Kipgen, Kom, Manlung Machong, Mate, Milhiem, Neihchiel, Paite, Purum, Ralte, Simte, Sukte, Tiddim Chin, Thadou, Thouthang, Tungdim, Vaiphei and Zou etc.

The official record of the appeal with the heading ‘Telegraph’ is signed by general secretary of Thadou National Council, Manipur, SH Seipu.

It is copied to Union Dy Minister (Welfare), Government of India, New Delhi; MP Manipur, joint secretary AICC(I) New Delhi, South Avenue, (Professor) Meijinlung Kamson and the Director (SCD), Ministry of Welfare, Government of India Shastri Bhavan, New Delhi.
