Six student bodies on Friday declared to launch intense agitations starting Saturday to demand NRC updation in Manipur.
The student bodies stated that the government had disregarded the demand for too long and the people have had enough of their incompetence.
Speaking to the media at Kwakeithel in Imphal, president of Manipur Students’ Federation Hijam Roshan highlighted that the body had resolved to launch the stir in adherence with the resolution taken at the public convention on October 19.
“A nine-point resolution was made in the convention out of which implementation of NRC in Manipur was one of the primary demands,” he said.
He pointed out that the issue of illegal immigration was an urgent matter which needed swift attention and maintained that NRC was the only measure which could douse the issue.
“Recently 32 illegal immigrants were detected during a combing operation in Moreh which raises pertinent questions on the extent of their infiltration into Manipur,” he said.
He stated that the detection was proof of their presence among Indian citizens and mentioned that collecting biometrics and personal details of individuals would not suffice.
What we need is stronger measures to detect and deport, he added.
He mentioned that student bodies and other civil groups had been pushing for NRC since long back but the effort had remained futile.
“As such we have decided to put thumping pressure on the authorities and ensure that the issue is settled once and for all,” he said.
He further sought the support of Meira Paibis, CSOs and other like-minded groups in pushing the demand.
