Five student bodies have strongly condemned the kidnapping of a student leader by unknown persons and have demanded for immediate unconditional release.
The five student bodies are DESAM, KSA, SUK, AIMS and a students organisation.
DESAM president Mayengbam Somorjit on Wednesday told the media at its head office located at Kwakeithel in Imphal West that on Tuesday a student leader, Kongbrailatpam Harideva, was abducted by unknown persons as he was returning home from a meeting conducted at Manipur University, Canchipur, Imphal West.
The meeting was conducted with the representatives of the five student bodies along with the Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) in connection with the ongoing crisis that has been continuing since May 3, 2023, he added.
Somorjit said the meeting was conducted after considering the issues faced by the students due to the ongoing communal crisis which has been affecting the students.
He said the whereabouts of Harideva is not known till date.
Abducting a student leader amid the crisis is an unfortunate act, he said and appealed to the individuals or organisations not to threaten student leaders. He also appealed for the immediate release of Harideva without any conditions.
Women bodies of Manipur also appealed for the immediate unconditional release of the student leader.
Latest reports said, the student leader Harideva Kongrailatpam had been released.
