Manipur: Section 144 CrPC clamped in Jiribam

Restrictions have been imposed on assembly of five or more persons which is likely to turn unlawful and carrying of firearms, swords, sticks, stone or other lethal weapons, sharp edged artide/objects of any description which can be used as offensive weapons.

The district magistrate, Jiribam on Thursday clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), 1973 in Jiribam district with immediate effect until further order.

As per the latest order issued by district magistrate, Jiribam Krishna Kumar, the move was taken following a report from the superintendent of police, Jiribam on Thursday, stating that there is still likelihood of wide spread disturbance to peace and public tranquility or a riot or any affray in the area because of the unlawful activities of some anti-social elements for furtherance of their evil designs.

The statement stated that such disturbances may result in serious breach of peace, public tranquility and imminent danger to human life and properties.

Movement of any person outside their respective residences for the revenue jurisdiction of Jiribam District is restricted, it mentioned. However, there shall be curfew relaxation from 5 am to 8 pm, it added.

The order will not apply to the government agencies/functionaries and security forces involved in the enforcement of law and order and other essential services, it maintained.

It stated that in case of emergency and for persons who want to take out procession for marriage, funeral etc. within the scheduled area, applications may be made to the district magistrate or to the superintendent of police, Jiribam district, for permission and they shall not take out any procession until the written permission is obtained from the authorities.

‘Whereas, there is emergency, circumstances do not permit serving due notice upon the public, this order is passed ex-parte and is directed to the public in general. This order will come into force with immediate effect from May 2, 2024 and will remain in force until further order,’ it mentioned.
