A prisoner, who was brought to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Science (JNIMS) for medical treatment on Tuesday, was arrested inside the campus of Superintendent of police, Imphal East while he was trying to escape, sources said.
Police said the inmate has been identified as Ningthoukhongjam Gandharaj Singh, 21, of Kumbi, Bishnupur district.
The prison guard reportedly found Gandharaj trying to hang himself inside the cell of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa, Imphal East on Tuesday morning.
Gandharaj was brought to JNIMS for treatment but he escaped from the police custody inside the hospital complex while he was about to be treated. The police cordon the area and conducted a search operation.
He was found hiding inside the campus of SP, Imphal East, on top of a water storage tank which is located adjacent to JNIMS hospital on the eastern side.
When a team of media went to the office of SP, Imphal East to take reports of the incident, they were stopped at the gate and refused entry.
Inspector General of Police (Zone-I), Themthing Ngasava and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) (Range I), K Kabib were seen coming out from the SP’s office campus, and the prisoner was brought back to Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa, according to reports.
