Manipur: Police alleged of refusing to register FIR

A woman from Imphal East filed a representation to SP, Imphal East on November 12 for registering an FIR as OC Women Police Station, Imphal East district had allegedly refused to do so.

A woman from Imphal East has raised allegations against the officer in-charge of Imphal East Women Police Station of refusing to register an FIR against her husband and in-laws of woman in connection with a case of domestic violence.

She claimed that her in-laws had allegedly demanded dowry as well as mentally tortured and threatened to kill her, if she returned to her matrimonial residence from her parent’s home.

She filed a representation to SP, Imphal East on November 12 for registering an FIR as OC Women Police Station, Imphal East district had allegedly refused to do so. Being aggrieved by the alleged inaction of the Police authority, she approached the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) for filling the instant complaint petition on November 27.

The MHRC took up the case as motion and directed OC Women Police Station, Imphal East district to appear in person on November 29. OC of Women PS appeared before the Commission and submitted a letter.

After going through the records including the letter, the Commission opined that OC Women Police Station, Imphal East district is not acting in accordance with law. Due to the negligence, the justice seeker is not getting justice, even when she was forced to leave the house of her husband by her in-laws. The commission stated that it is not happy with the inaction of the OC Women Police Station, Imphal East.

Therefore, the commission directed SP Imphal East district S Ibomcha to appear before the Commission on Friday along with the OC Women Police Station, Imphal East district.

S Ibomcha, SP Imphal East district assured the commission that he himself will look after the case and supervise the matter. Therefore, the commission closed the case, trusting SP for fair justice.

Further, the commission asked the SP to enquire into the allegation made against police authority.
