Manipur: One killed in mob violence

Police arrest six in arms loot incident.

Arms and ammunition of 5th IRB, Chingarel Tejpur, under Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East were reportedly looted by about 1500-2000 unknown armed miscreants on Tuesday evening.

As per sources, there was an exchange of gunfire between the armed miscreants and security personnel deployed at 5th IRB around 8.39 pm on Tuesday. The exact number of arms and ammunition looted from the 5th IRB armory is yet to be ascertained as the arms registers have been torn up by the miscreants, sources said.

After looting 5th IRB, they further attempted to loot arms and ammunition from Manipur Police Training College and 6th IRB at Pangei around 10 pm, sources said. In order to disperse the armed miscreants, state and central forces fired anti-riot rounds and blank firing, in which one person died and three persons sustained injuries, it said.

The deceased person has been identified as one Okram Santosh, 24, son of Okram Inao of Pangei Okram Leikai. He succumbed to a bullet injury on his right shoulder and was declared dead.

The injured persons are Takhellambam Rex, 20, son of T Rakesh of Sagolband Tera Tongbram Leikai, and Khomdram Robertson, 27, son of Kh Samungou of Heingang Makha Leikai and and Tekcham Sanathoi, 18, son of Tekcham London of Uyumpok, Imphal East District.

Meanwhile, Imphal East District Police have arrested at least six persons in connection with the arms loot. The arrested persons are Mayengbam Binod Singh, 31, son of M Ibochaoba Singh of Waiton Makha Leikai, Imphal East; Leitanthem Naoba Meitei, 37, son of (L) L Binoy Meitei of Waiton Mayai Leikai, Imphal East and RK Sanjoy, 37, son of RK Sanahal of Khurai Chingangbam Leikai, Imphal East.

Rajkumar Rocy Singh ,36, son of (L) RK Thambalsana Singh of Khurai Chingangbam Leikai, Imphal East; Wangmayum Sanathoi, 21, son of W Noor Hussain of KR Lane New Checkon, Imphal East and Sunir Phundreimayum, 19, son of Md Sagir Ahamad of Lilong Mayai Leikai a/p KR Lane New Checkon, Imphal East were also arrested.

They were arrested in connection with FIR No. 07(02)2024 Lamlai Polcie Station, under section 144/147/149/ 379A/427/447/34 IPC, 25(1-B) A Act & 16 UA (P) Act. They were produced before the JMFC, Imphal East and remanded in seven days police custody on Wednesday.
