Ace entrepreneur Thangjam Dhabali on Thursday stressed the need of introducing a mass skill training programme on construction and building considering the lack of indigenous skill labour in construction works in Manipur.

Speaking during the observance of the 2nd Foundation Day of All Manipur Candle Makers' Association under the theme 'Self Reliance Economy' at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal, Dhabali pointed out that self-employment is the only option to address the issue of unemployment in the state.

He said due to lack of skilled labour in construction works, most of the jobs relating to construction are being taken up by outsiders, thereby draining the economy of the state.

Dhabali informed that around 8 lakh educated people in the state are facing the wrath of unemployment as they aim only for white collar jobs for the sake of job security.

However, providing white collar jobs for all by the state government is out of context and the only solution to tackle unemployment is self-employment, he said, adding that one should also know that self-employment is the initial step of becoming an entrepreneur, who is a job giver.

Pointing out that some changes have been witnessed in the last few years where youths have been putting more focus on entrepreneurship, he said it is a good sign.

Development automatically comes into a region where there is a good economy, entrepreneurship and manufacturing industries, he said, adding, "The more the number of entrepreneurs, the economy of the region will eventually grow”.

Sharing his ideas, he suggested the candle makers study the trends and demands in the market before making a specific model.

The programme was also attended by president of All Manipur Candle Makers' Association Konthoujam Anandabi Leima; former professor and HoD Urology RIMS, Cancer Survivor Dr Sinam Rajendra Singh and president of Manipur Development Council Ayam Meiraba Khuman as dignitaries.
