Manipur: Mother, two daughters detained for smuggling gold

The DPF Unit Imphal Customs Division recovered 415.10 gram of gold ornaments worth over Rs. 27 lakh.

In a significant crackdown on illegal activities, officers of the DPF Unit Imphal Customs Division on Friday detained three female passengers at the Canchipur area and recovered 415.10 gram of gold ornaments worth over Rs. 27 lakh.

A release by the deputy commissioner of Customs Division Imphal, Rajivkumar Yengkhom, stated that acting on specific information, the officers intercepted the suspects as they were traveling from Moreh towards Imphal.

Upon inspection, the officers uncovered a substantial haul of contraband items, including eight gold bangles and two gold chains in semi-finished/rough form of foreign origin, the Customs said, adding the total weight of the seized items amounted to 415.10 gram, with an estimated value of Rs 27,21,460.

The detainees have been identified as Sunita Devi, wife of Inderjeet Chouhan; Indu Kumari, daughter of Inderjeet Chouhan, and Reshma Kumar, daughter of Inderjeet Chouhan, all from Ward No.2, Dalpatti, Tengnoupal subdivision, Chandel district, it said.

The seized gold items, including bangles and chains, have been confiscated and are currently held at the Customs Divisional Office in Imphal, it added.

Furthermore, the suspects have been apprehended under relevant sections of the Customs Act, 1962, it said adding that the investigation into the case continues.
