Meira Paibis stormed Khongjom Police station condemning the verbal abuse towards the womenfolk by a sub inspector (SI) of Thoubal district commando on Tuesday and also demanded that the SI should make a public apology to the Meira Paibis.
As per reports, a combined team including central forces led by Khongjom PS OC Ningombam Suresh went to Tekcham under the jurisdiction of Khongjom PS, Thoubal district, to carry out a search operation as suspicious activities were reported in the area. The combined team were denied entry in the area by the Meira paibis of Tekcham due to the ongoing violence as they did not have any prior communication with the village leaders and meira paibis regarding the search operation, added the reports.
Thoubal Commando SI Dhanabir, who was among the combined forces, reportedly abused the Meira Paibis verbally while retreating from the area. Condemning his behaviour towards the womenfolk, they stormed the police station and protested in front of the police station gate and Meira Paibis of Samaram, Sapam and Tentha also joined in the protest on hearing the news.
A police team led by Thoubal district police additional SP (ops) O. Wangkhomba rushed to the area and spoke with some Meira Paibi leaders at Khongjom police station. The Meira Paibis strongly condemned the act of the combined security forces for trying to carry out a search operation without the knowledge of the village leaders and the Meira Paibis. They also demanded a public apology from SI Dhanabir who verbally abused them.
Additional SP (ops) proposed that he will apologise on behalf of the commando personnel but the womenfolk denied and scuffle occurred. The agitated Meira Paibis again stormed the gate of the Ps and tried to break but failed as CRPF personnels who were stationed at Khongjom PS fired tear gas shells and dispersed the mob.
Later, the Meira Paibis staged a sit-in-protest at Khongjom demanding a public apology from SI Dhanabir and that he should be transferred from the PS for his rude behaviour.
