Locals of Yairipok Nungbrang village under Andro assembly constituency in Imphal East, Manipur staged a protest on Thursday, decrying the state government’s alleged attempt to remove three commando teams from the said village.
According to sources, an irate mob gathered in front of the state force camp and sat in front of it, blocking the gate.
Taking part in the protest, one meira paibi leader pointed out that there are several Kuki villages within 1 km radius from Nungbrang village namely Kamuching, Kamu Tampak Bongba Khullen, Lairok Vaiphei etc. She conveyed the apprehensions of the weary villagers who are living in constant fear of possible attacks.
She stated that the three commando teams stationed at the area along with the locals have been guarding the village. She expressed discontentment over the state government’s alleged attempt to remove the commando team from the village amid such a tense situation.
‘No state force can be removed from Nungbrang village’, she asserted, adding that the villagers will allow the same only when another state force team either from Imphal West is deployed in the village. She further drew the attention of Thoubal SP and the government towards their demand.
The meira paibi leader also warned that the villagers will launch various intense agitations if the authorities concerned fail to pay heed to the demands made. The villagers chanted various slogans during the protest.
Mention may be made that residents of Nungbrang village fled their homes following the conflict that erupted in the State on May 3. They have only started returning to the village from the relief camps, following the deployment of the three commando teams in the village.
