Landslide along national highway 202 in Manipur on Tuesday has brought vehicular movement to a grinding halt amid incessant rainfall and gusty winds in the state.
The ongoing inclement weather has paralyzed normal lives of the populace of Ukhrul district as no activity could be initiated in the present condition prevailing in the region.
Sources said that landslides occurred at three major portions - Mongkot Chepu along Imphal to Ukhrul road while the other two occurred at Kaziphung (Hungpung) and Shirui along Ukhrul to Jessami highway.
As per reports, landslides have been reported in different areas of the district. There are also reports of electric poles being swept off.
Following reports of landslides along NH 202, NHIDCL has deputed machinery for road clearance.
It is reported that the landslide at Mongkot has been restored. However, road clearance on Shirui couldn’t be obtained even though necessary machinery had been already sent earlier in the day.
With rain showing no sign of receding, landslides are likely to increase in different areas of Ukhrul district.
Another worrisome factor is that with the volume of river flowing above danger mark several paddy fields are likely to be inundated and washed away.
Incessant showers of rainfall have come at a time when the state is reeling with soaring temperatures.
According to the MET office record, Ukhrul recorded the highest rainfall in the state at over 90 mm.
